Foraged Coiled Basketry

Learn the art of making coiled baskets from locally foraged plant fibers. In this class students will have hands-on instruction to create and bring home a coiled basket from foraged plant fibers. Students will also learn what plants can be used for coiled basketry and how to prepare them.

Fermenting Basics

Alongside canning, fermenting is a wonderful way to not only preserve food but make some incredible dishes as well. In this class students will learn some fermenting history and basic principles plus a hands-on fermentation portion where they can make and take home pickles, kraut, and kimchi. There will be a post-class lunch made by Sarah using ferments. For those interested, there is a class on Fermented Beverages in the afternoon.

In this class, students will create their own kombucha, beet / fruit kvass, probiotic soda, and Jun (a honey based ferment) using locally or easy to acquire ingredients. Topics like food safety and troubleshooting these ferments will be covered alongside the basic principles of crafting a fermented drink. For those interested, a class on Fermenting Basics will be held in the morning prior to this course.

Spinning Wool on a Drop Spindle

In this class we will be learning how to spin wool into yarn and ply it on a drop spindle. We'll spin a variety of wool breeds (some local wool), and Kansas City based Luthvarian Fiber Arts' drop spindles. You will also try out different wool preparation methods and receive a handout with instructions and resources.

All levels of experience are welcome.

Woodworking Hand Tool Basics

This is a part of the Simple Furniture Series, students can register for the courses individually or for all classes at a discount. In this three class series, students will learn hand tool basics, build a wooden mallet and finish by building a stool or table.

In this class students will learn about the variety of hand tools used in woodworking as well as maintaining and sharpening the tools. Students will then practice cutting and chiseling to understand the feel and basics of the tools.

This is a part of the Simple Furniture Series, students can register for the courses individually or for all classes at a discount. In this three class series, students will learn hand tool basics, build a wooden mallet and finish by building a stool or table.

The mallet is at the heart of many crafts, especially when working with wood and softer stones. In this class you will select from some wood options (or you can bring your own material) and turn it into a custom mallet which you can take home for personal projects or bring back to use in our Furniture Making or Stone Relief Carving Classes! No woodworking experience is needed and all materials and tools will be provided.

Rustic Stool or Table Build

In this class, students will be building a stool or small table using hand tools (like the mallet made in the previous course) and simple joinery techniques.

Crafting with Koji: Miso Making Workshop

Hands on miso making! Learn the ins and outs of mold based ferments and where to source koji. We’ll make a group batch of red miso that each person will take home a jar of to ferment for ten months (making it a one year miso in miso years). Learn how to make a nut based miso with cashews and a shio koji marinade. This course includes lunch, served at the beginning of class as a way to sample the finished products of what we make in the class.

Visible Mending 101

This is a part of the Visible Mending Series, students can register for the courses individually or for all classes at a discount. In this four class series, students will learn basic mending principles while working on a variety of types of garments from denim to knitwear.

In this class, participants will learn the basics of mending damaged clothing or bags. Mending skills taught will be tailored to participants items needing mending. We will cover mending holes, tears, and more!  Each participant will bring their own item(s) in need of mending, and leave with an embroidery needle, thread, and floss, and a beautifully mended garment!.

This is a part of the Visible Mending Series, students can register for the courses individually or for all classes at a discount. In this four class series, students will learn basic mending principles while working on a variety of types of garments from denim to knitwear.

In this class, participants will learn the basics of using embroidery to mend and embellish damaged clothing or bags. Many different stitches will be taught - from decorative lines, to ladder stitches, to floral embroidery, and more. Each participant will bring their own item(s) in need of mending, and leave with an embroidery needle and floss, and a beautifully mended garment!

Darning Looms

In this class, participants will learn the basics of using a darning loom to mend socks, knits, or other clothing. Each participant will leave with a loom and floss of their own.

In this class, participants will learn the basics of mending denim with denim patches. We will cover the process of mending denim, designing and attaching patches, and several different stitch patterns and their history. Each participant will bring their own garments or denim items for mending or request that one be supplied for class time only.

In this class, participants will learn the basics of mending knit items (not jersey or stretch fabric, but rather sweaters and the like). We will cover invisible and visible methods of reparing knit items. Each participant will bring their own garments or items for mending or request that one be supplied for class time only.

Foraging Cattails for Tasty Treats

Learn to harvest various parts of broad-leaf cattails (Typha latifolia) as part of a foraging adventure.  Rhizomes, hearts, spikes, and pollen of cattails will be harvested during the spring and early summer so the workshop will have multiple dates.

Cattails grow in wetlands and edges of ponds so dress for walking and working in shallow water.  Participants will need to bring container for storing plant parts, a shovel for digging in pond water, and a knife for trimming. A durable plastic bag will be needed to store cattail pollen.
